Common problems

Signs the oven needs a repair

Ovens fail in fairly predictable ways. Electric ovens rely on bake and broil elements, while gas ovens rely on an igniter that must glow hot enough to open the gas valve. Both use a temperature sensor and a control to hold the setting.

  • Oven stays cold or barely warms
  • Gas oven clicks or glows but never lights
  • Bake element has a visible break or blister
  • Temperature far off the setting
  • Display blank or showing an error
  • Door locked after self-clean

The visit

What a technician usually checks

A general outline only. The independent provider decides what the visit includes and explains any findings.

  1. Element or igniter

Tests the bake and broil elements, or checks the igniter's current draw on gas models.

  2. Temperature sensor

Measures the sensor's resistance against the specification for the model.

  3. Controls

Checks the control board, relays and clock or display for faults.

  4. Door and gasket

Looks at the door seal, hinges and lock, which affect heat retention and self-clean.

Plain guidance

Repair or replace?

When a repair often makes sense

Bake elements, gas igniters, temperature sensors and door gaskets are typical oven repairs and are usually worth doing on an otherwise sound oven.

When replacement may come up

Replacement may come up when the oven cavity is rusted, when the control board fails on a much older model, or when several parts are failing at once. Wall ovens can be harder to match, so ask about sizes.

Questions

Oven Repair: questions homeowners ask

CALL NOW

A weak igniter is a common cause. It may glow but not draw enough current to open the gas valve fully. A technician can measure the igniter and replace it if it is out of range.

No. A broken or blistered element can spark and damage the oven. Turn the oven off at the breaker, let it cool and call so the element can be replaced.

Let the oven cool completely, then try turning the oven off and on at the breaker. If the lock still will not release, the lock motor or control may need attention.

Many providers repair built-in wall ovens as well as ranges. Mention that it is a wall oven and whether it is a single or double unit.
